Workshop on Strengthening Justice in SGBV Cases

A specialized workshop titled “The Use of Expert Opinions (Forensic Medicine and Science) for Justice in Cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)” was successfully held at the National Police Academy of Sri Lanka, Katana.

The programme brought together Investigation Officers from Police Women and Children Bureau Units islandwide, alongside an esteemed panel of judges, prosecutors, forensic specialists, and senior investigation officers who served as resource persons. Their combined expertise created a dynamic platform for in-depth discussions on professional expectations, investigative challenges, and best practices in handling SGBV cases.

Through expert presentations, case-based group activities, and an engaging panel discussion, participants enhanced their knowledge on effective investigation techniques and the strategic use of forensic medical and scientific evidence to strengthen prosecutions—ultimately improving access to justice for victim survivors of SGBV.

This important initiative was jointly organized by the Department of Forensic Medicine of the University of Kelaniya and the National Police Academy, Sri Lanka Police, under the “Enabling Access to Justice for Victim Survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence” project.

The project is funded by the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Sri Lanka, together with United Nations Population Fund.
